During my first week of work in HR I learned the importance of logs. There is a log for terminations, applications, EEO documents, and other noteworthy pieces of information.

I had to search the terminations log to determine if an individual worked at the company over 20 years ago. As I searched through each tab it hit me. Look at all these people. They are just names on an excel spreadsheet. Yet, behind their names are stories, people and lives.

I thought how big of a deal it was for me to leave my dream job, and begin a mid-life career transition. It has been an excruciating process. Leave what you love, and then figure out what to do next.

Over the past two years there were many prayers, advice and counsel sought, tears shed and depression set in. What should I do with my life? What is next?

When the call came with  the job offer I knew God had answered all the prayers. He was making it clear what direction I should take. We celebrated! It was a big deal. More prayers were made. What would this lead to? What is God doing? Lord, help Marcy on her career transition, and thank you for answering our prayers.

Yet, my name will just end up on an Excel spreadsheet. One day someone will look back and happen to see my name. They won’t know who I am. I won’t look like a big deal. I will just be a name.

Yet, I have a story. I have a life. What I do in my life is a big deal to me, and my family. It’s difficult to think I am just a name.

Our lives and work have meaning because we are serving and glorifying God. They have eternal meaning. Our names are in the book of life. That is important.

God has a plan and purpose for His children. When we live out that plan there is eternal meaning. HR might see you as a name and as another applicant to process, but God sees much more.

If your name is going to end up on some HR spreadsheet, then let’s be sure it’s on the right spreadsheet. We shouldn’t stay in a position if we feel God is calling us somewhere else. We shouldn’t let fear prevent us from striving for new opportunities that allow us to use our skills and talent.

If your not on the right spreadsheet then get on the right one.
It might not be a big deal to HR, but it’s a big deal to you. It’s a big deal to God.

God has a neat way of using nobodies to do great things.
He has a way of using the most humble and poor people to change the world.
He has a plan and a purpose for each of His children.
We might be just a name on an Excel spreadsheet, but we are a child of God.
